Portugal é uma região vitivinícola de excelência mundial, desde as extensas planícies alentejanas, às areias de Palmela, à forte influência marítima do Algarve e Extremadura, à tipicidade do Tejo e às íngremes encostas do Douro, fazem deste pequeno país uma multiplicidade de terroirs, favoráveis à produção de vinho de Qualidade.

No entanto e face à forte competitividade atual dos mercados mundiais, toda a divulgação e promoção é pouca e, toda a que vem é sem duvida bem-vinda, especialmente se relatada por este fantástico trabalho sobre as vindimas do Douro.

Um documentário elaborado por um grupo de três apaixonados por Portugal e pelo Douro, esta pré-visualização do trabalho, elaborado em três fases distintas, revela-nos muito sobre o Douro, a sua história, as suas famílias e, os seus vinhos.

Elaborado por Zev Robinson, Albertina Torres e seu marido, estes relataram à Janela de Cheiros, que só com muita vontade, paixão e dedicação se conseguem fazer estes trabalhos. Não quero também deixar de referir, palavras de Albertina Torres, o agradecimento a Oscar Quevedo, pela fantástica ajuda e apoio para a realização deste documentário.

A ser exibido na Califórnia e Alemanha, a imagem de Portugal, sob as mãos do Douro, está a ser divulgada e, para grande deleite dos portugueses, com uma aceitação e admiração digna dos nossos vinhos. Dentro dos próximos meses o documentário será também exibido em Londres, Amesterdão e Portugal.

A preview of my "Life on the Douro" documentary. Still a lot of work to do on it, bu I'll be returning to Porto and the Douro region to film more material, including traveling about a dozen Port wine enthusiast to about a dozen wineries on the "For The Love of Port" week-long tour, giving a variety of perspecitves on the region, its wines and its histories.

Este é o segundo trailer, elaborado com o material que recolhi durante os 23 dias, na minha terceira e quarta viagem ao Porto e à região do Douro. A quarta viagem foi realizada no âmbito do meu filme “Por amor ao Porto”. Para ser realizado em Setembro de 2011, o filme relata o Douro durante três séculos de história da região, a situação atual e os seus vinhos.

This is the second trailer using material filmed during 23 days on my third and fourth trips to Porto and the Douro region. The fourth trip was with a For the Love of Port tour, arranged specially for my film. Due to be released in September, 2011, the film will deal with the three centuries and current situation of the region and its wines.

Este é o terceiro trailer sobre “A vida no Douro”, neste foco especialmente as famílias e as ligações que fazem esta região tão fascinante, bem como recolher material da minha quinta viagem.

This is the third trailer for Life on the Douro, this time focusing on the family and other connections that make the region so fascinating, and adding material from my fifth trip there.

Our Story

Life on the Douro is a documentary connecting 300 years of history with the current situation in Porto and the Douro and the recent rejuvenation of the region. Many of the interviewees talk about their family history going back two and three centuries as if they had lived it themselves, in great detail, intimacy and warmth, and often with a great sense of humour as well.

I've been lucky to have such fantastic material to work with - the personal stories, the history of the region, and the breath-taking terraces and scenery - all which has lent itself to my concerns of creating a strong story structure and powerful imagery.

The Impact

The story of wine in general is widely unknown, and if more people would be aware that it is much, much more than just a beverage, I believe there would be much greater interest in it. This is especially true for Portugal, a country that historically has had a wide-spread influence across the globe but is a relatively unknown quanitity today. Whereas Port and Douro wines are considered excellent amongst experts, they don't have the same wide-spread reputation as those of other countries.

What We Need & What You Get

The money will be used for post-production costs including a professional sound mix and color grading, a transfer from the European PAL television system to the American NTSC system, subtitles, and music rights. If I go over the goal, the extra money will be used to defray the costs of setting up screenings and disseminating the film.

The film is almost done, an early rough cut has been completed, and I'm busy refining it. I have traveled to the Douro region four times already for a total of more than 30 days, and will be returning to film for another ten days in July for two or three more important interviews to fill a couple of gaps, as well as get more shots of specific things that the film needs - the old streets of Porto and Gaia, the old railway stations, a couple of wineries, etc.

The film will be finished and start screening this autumn, and I could temporarily skip or skimp on some of the above, but would like to have the best quality possible to show around the world over the next year, and help give the region, its people and its wines, and Portugal in general, the recognition they deserve.

There is the thank you credit on the web site for five dollars, but the basic perk is the pre-order of the DVD for 15 dollars, shipping included. Then there are invites to events that will include premiere screenings, after party with Port and Douro wines (possibly presented by people with intimate knowledge of the region), a thanks on the end credits of the film, and associate and executive producer credits. I'm also offering a series of archival quality digital prints that I have created, each signed and number in a series of 10.
